How to repair credit
Many people do not realize how important their credit is until it is too late. Other people have fallen onto some hard times and have fallen behind in payments. No matter what your circumstances are, you can work on repairing your credit. Here are some things you can do to raise your credit score.
First, you need to make an honest inventory of what you owe. Gather up every bill, every statement, and anything else that you know you owe on. Make a list of every debt and what the current balance is. List the interest rate.
This is the hardest step to do, but it is very important. You need to know how much you owe so that you can work to fix it. Once you know what you owe, you will want to pull your credit report from the three major credit bureaus. You need to get all three reports because there can be different information on each one. You are entitled to a free credit report every year (in most states) and you can get a free credit report anytime that you have been turned down for credit.
Once you have these things gathered, it is time to start the work of repairing your credit. The first thing you will want to do is take a hard look at your credit report. If there are debts on it that you didn’t include in your original list, include them now. Check each item for accuracy. If you find any mistakes, you will want to dispute the record. It is the responsibility of the credit bureau to prove that you owe the money. They must investigate your claim, typically within thirty days, and provide you with information as to why you owe the debt. If it is found to be an error, they will remove it. They are required to provide you with a new copy of your credit report to show that it is removed if you request it. Also, they must forward the corrected information to anyone who has requested a credit report in the past six months if you want them to.
After you have made sure that your credit report is up to date, you will want to start paying down your debt. You will first want to make the minimum payment on each credit card. Do not allow any of your bills to be late, even by one day. Paying your bills on time is an important part of having good credit. With the money you have left over, start paying on the highest interest card. Put as much money towards the card as you can. This might be the time to cut out on the non-essentials in your life such as cable or the cup of coffee from the coffee shop. You can also try calling your credit card companies to ask if they will lower you rates. Many times they will, just if you ask.
Do not allow yourself to get behind. You need to, at least, make the minimum payment on each card, each month on time. The longer you do this, the better your credit will become. Don’t shut down your cards once you’ve paid them off. Part of your credit score comes from the amount of credit you have versus how much you have used. If you close down your cards, this amount will be smaller and hurt your score. However, don’t use your cards! One great trick is putting the in a cup of water and freezing them. This way you can’t make any impulse purchases.
Repairing your credit can take some time. In most instances, negative items on your credit report can be displayed for at least seven years. However, if you work hard to make sure that you do not fall behind again, your score will continue to improve. Eventually, your credit will be back to perfect.
If you have are having a lot of problems with your debt, it might be wise to seek out the help of a professional. Make sure you do a lot of research though. Don’t believe anyone who has a quick sure-fire way to fix your credit. As explained here, credit repair takes time. Make sure you work with someone whom you can trust.
